We celebrated my daughter Faith’s thirteenth birthday yesterday. Actually, we have been celebrating all weekend the fact our little girl is now a “TEENAGER!!”
As we sang, as we blew out candles, as we watched her face beam as she opened presents, the question arose in my mind, “Why do we celebrate birthdays?”
SeeingGodatWorkEveryDay…
This question really fascinated me.
It seemed so simple and yet the question itself took me down lots of roads, highways and byways…
I’m not so sure the answer which hit me like a ton of bricks is all that profound.
I have no doubt, millions if not billions of people have already discovered the answer to my quest.
Are you ready for the answer to “Why do we celebrate birthdays?”
“LIFE!!”
We love to celebrate that which is alive, vibrant, growing, energetic, dashing, vivacious, full of zest, zing and vigor!
And when I looked into my daughter’s eyes that is exactly what I saw – LIFE!
What LIFE are you celebrating today?
It doesn’t have to be someone’s birthday for you to celebrate life.
In Deuteronomy 30 (I know you were just reading this the other day during your daily devotional!!), Moses gives an amazing sermon on the blessings of God as well as some of the curses we experience when we disregard God’s instructions and guidance. At the end of his sermon Moses says this:
I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose LIFE that you and your offspring may live, 20 loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your LIFE and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”
Happy 13th Birthday to my daughter Faith!!
I love the LIFE which is in you.
I love the LIFE which you bring to this world and to our family.
I love the LIFE who guides you and gives you your length of days.
Life and death, blessing and curse have been set before us.
Which will you choose?
Choose LIFE and live…
