Fragrance, Scent and the Aroma of Grace
Scent is one of the most powerful of the five senses, warning us of danger, triggering cherished memories and even helping us to find our true love…
Researchers suggest on a global scale the perfume/cologne industry in 2018 will be worth a whopping 45.8 billion dollars.
The world also makes a big statement – “Scent matters.”
What kind of perfume or cologne do you wear?
How often do you wear it?
Every day? Once a week? Just on hot dates? First thing in the morning?
Fragrance, Scent and Aroma played a large role in the Bible as Jesus was twice anointed with very expensive perfume. Each anointing brought criticism as the anointing was perceived as a waste of money, since poor people could have benefited from the sale of the perfume.
In John 12 as Jesus was being anointed by Mary, the gospel writer says, “The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.”
Which raises the question for us today.
What do we smell like?
What aroma do we carry around with us?
When we walk into a room, the room is filled with the fragrance of…???
Love?
Sarcasm?
Judgment?
Superiority?
Elitism?
Humility?
Love?
Grace?
Laughter?
Fun?
Party Pooper?
As the perfume/cologne of God’s grace, faith, mercy, and love is poured upon our souls and as we walk about this earth, what “fragrance, scent and aroma” do we allow the world to smell?
Let’s make it our aim this week to allow our “aroma of grace” to be an attractive scent which helps others find their true love – God!
