Carls Jr Hamburger
My first “paycheck” job was at the hamburger restaurant chain “Carl’s Jr.” founded by Cark Karcher back in the 1940’s (originally a Hot Dog stand), in Los Angeles.
It was the summer after my junior year in high school and there I was putting frozen hamburgers on the grill, submerging French fries into 48,000 degree grease, making burgers, running a cash register, cleaning the dining area. I had it going on! All the while wearing my ultra-cool “brown and orange” polyester uniform with the classic Carl’s Jr. hat.
One day, my friend Fred and I were in charge of making the hamburgers. The order came back, “Famous Star (name of one of the hamburgers), with extra, extra, extra onions!”
I asked the cashier, “Extra, extra, extra onions?” She vigorously nodded her head in the affirmative. I looked at Fred. Fred looked at me. No words needed to be exchanged. We were going to give this lady, EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA ONIONS!
And so we did… I bet we piled ten to twelve rings of large raw onions on this lady’s hamburger. The burger was “stacked” with the extra onions. We could barely get the wrapping around the burger it was piled so high.
We wrapped the burger, placed it on the tray along with the large fries and medium drink.
We looked on with a great deal of satisfaction as the lady who ordered extra, extra, extra onions picked up her tray and headed to the dining room.
About five minutes lady, the “extra, extra, extra onions” lady appeared at the counter with her “half-eaten” sandwich laying on the wide-open wrapper with a very discouraging and yet sheepish smile on her face. I asked her, “May I help you?”
Her reply made me and Fred laugh out loud…
“You forgot the hamburger!”
And sure enough… we had forgotten to place the hamburger on the bun!
What made Fred and I laugh even more was this lady had eaten half her sandwich before she realized there was no burger!

How’s your day going so far today?
I am just wondering… are you so focused on the “onions’ of life, the “extras” of life, the “condiments” of life that you have forgotten to feast on the burger (the main thing) of life?
Happens to me all the time!
There’s an old saying, “Keep the main thing, the main thing.” Easier said than done.
I don’t know what the main thing is for you, but for me, it is “seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” (Matthew 6: 33) and “loving one another.” (John 13. 34).
When I start focusing on all the “EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRAS”, that is when I miss out on the burger of life and end up having nothing but a mouthful of bad breath…
Enjoy your burger today…
