“Ski Bum Trip 2016”, the weekend I spend with four of my college buddies started with a bang!
Or should I say, “A break!”
Not two hours into our first day of skiing in the majestic mountains surrounding Salt Lake City, Utah, my friend Chuck came to a slow stop at the bottom of a slope and heard a “POP!”
I was on the other side of the mountain when I received a text message showing a photo of Chuck in the medical clinic.
We made our way down the mountain and on to the Intermountain Hospital emergency room where there was much laughter and joking all at Chuck’s expense.
Seven hours later we were on our way back to the condo with an official diagnosis of “Fracture of the Tibia”, right below the right kneecap. UGH!
Needless to say, a pall was cast over the weekend as the predominant thought clouding our brains was, “If this can happen to the best skier in the group, I bet it can happen to me!”
The next day, with the weather forecast of rain and unusual warm temperatures, the remaining healthy four of us decided to venture out and do something really extreme… Snowshoeing!
We snowshoed into the wilderness for hours. I had no idea where we were or how we were going to get out of the woods. It was rather disconcerting.
Fortunately, my friends are not as directionally and spatially challenged as I am. We made our way back to the Nordic Center at Solitude, took another one kilometer trek around the frozen lake and then piled into the car and headed for home.
Hungry as we were the decision to eat at the Porcupine restaurant was an easy one.
We sat down, ordered our food, texted Chuck to make sure all the drugs he was on were working and then I made my way to the restroom to freshen up before dinner was actually served.
I confidently walked into the bathroom.
Quickly assessed the inside configuration of the bathroom and made my way to the nearest stall where I stood to go to the bathroom.
Another patron came into the bathroom and went into the adjoining stall while I was, let’s just say, “mid-stream.”
All of a sudden my brain caught up to my body as I started to think, I mean really think, I mean really thinking hard…(Listen in…)
“Hmmm… I wonder why there were flowers on the sink…
Hmmm… I wonder why there were no urinals in this bathroom…
Hmmm…I wonder why the sound I am making is much louder than the sound the person in the adjoining stall is making…
Hmmm… I wonder if I am in the Women’s bathroom…
Hmmm… I wonder if I can get out of here as fast as possible without getting caught!…”
I slowly opened the stall door.
Once again my observant mind confirmed the following….
No urinals…
Nice flowers on the sink…
No other men in the bathroom…
Petite feet facing away from the commode in the other stall…
I didn’t even bother to wash my hands!
Exiting was foremost on my mind.
I slowly opened the door, quickly glanced down the hallway to see another door with a sign in bright white colors – “MEN”
The word “Beeline” entered my mind and I did exactly that…
I came back to the table, with a big smirk on my face.
My three friends immediately asked, “What did you do?”
I kept thinking to myself…
“What was I thinking?”
SeeingGodatWorkEveryDay…
One of the most tragic observations I have made in life is the large number of people who reach a certain stage and age in life and all of a sudden ask,
“How did I get here? What was I thinking?”
A huge, devastating reality is the number of people who go through life “unconsciously” with no forethought, no thinking, no intentionality, no plan…simply going through the motions of life until one day, way down the road, they think to themselves, “What have I been thinking?”
Let me encourage you to “think” today.
Think about who you are…
Think about whose you are…
Think about what you are doing…
Think about where you are going…
Think about why you do what you do…
Think about how you came to be the person you are…
Think about how you can become the person God wants you to be…
Think!
Think now before you all of a sudden find yourself in the wrong bathroom wondering,
“How did I get here? What was I thinking?”
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” (Philippians 4: 8)
