Who can forget the eloquent letter written to Mrs. Bixby from President Abraham Lincoln comforting her on the loss of her five sons fighting for the Union in the Civil War that was featured in the patriotic movie “Saving Private Ryan?”

Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.
Dear Madam,
I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

On this Veteran’s Day 2014 in honor of the armistice that was signed on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh hour in the year 1918… To the brave and courageous men and women of these United States of America who took the oath and signed their name on the bottom line to offer their lives in such a way that one day, God forbid, their loved ones back home might receive a similar letter, I stand at attention and offer you my most heartfelt, honorable salute. Thank you!
Freedom is never free!
Thank you to the men and women who currently serve and have served.
Thank you to the families who have sacrificed much along with their beloved veterans.

I never volunteered to serve in our nation’s military.
I never took the oath or signed on the bottom line.
I did however, take an oath to serve the Lord my God with all my heart, mind, strength, and spirit.
And due to that commitment comes sacrifice…
There are days that I wonder if I have sacrificed enough to honor the kingdom, the God and the Lord of Lords that I have promised to serve and for whom I call it a privilege to offer my life as a sacrifice.
I thank all of the Christians that have literally offered their very lives as a sacrifice to build up the kingdom of God.
They have sacrificially laid their lives on the altar of freedom so that we may continue to walk in the freedom Christ offers to every one of us.
To those Christians I offer my heartfelt and tender salute!
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5. 10)
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12. 1)
