The day after the 242nd birthday of the United States of America!
Last night I watched the “Red rockets red glare” and the “Bombs bursting in air”.
They “gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there”…
Two hundred and forty-two years later!
Last night I sang the “Star Spangled Banner” for the one millionth time…
I got chill bumps while singing, like I do EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
A friend of mine shared this remembrance of her dad singing the Star Spangled Banner rather loudly at some event:
When I was young I would say “Dad, that’s embarrassing when you sing it that loud”.
And he’d say “it’s embarrassing when you don’t “.

Last night, as I watched the fireworks my heart was moved to tears of joy as my mind drifted into imagining every community which has watched fireworks over the last 242 years celebrating our independence and freedom.
From the town squares in Georgia to the circle in Orange, California.

From the seascapes of Florida to the rocky beaches of Oregon.
From the plains of Texas to the lakes of Minnesota.
From the urban sprawls to the rural country villages and “one-stoplight” communities.
From the freeways to the highways.
From the Poconos to the Sierras.
From the wheat of Kansas to the corn in Iowa.
From the potatoes in Idaho to the quays of the Mississippi River.
From the mountains of Alaska to the Mall of Washington, D.C..
From the volcanoes of Hawaii to the granite of New Hampshire.
From the Grand Canyon of Arizona to the “Show Me” state of Missouri.
From shore to shore and from border to border,
The great people of the United States of America have been proclaiming, “Freedom!” for two hundred and forty-two years!
Wow!
Last night, I came home and gazed at the ninety-five crosses which don our entry way wall.
Those ninety-five crosses have come from all over the world.
From Belfast to China.
From Jerusalem to Egypt.
From Nepal to Germany.
From Mexico to India.
From the Isle of Patmos to the island of New Zealand.
From Scotland, the home of Presbyterianism, to Guatemala.
As far as the east is from the west, that is how far those crosses have travelled.
Last night my heart was moved to tears of joy as my mind drifted into imagining every community which has looked at the Cross over the last 2,000 years celebrating our independence and freedom in Christ.
“For freedom, Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5: 1)
Wow!
Freedom in the United States of America.
Freedom in Christ, the world wide.
May we take neither for granted!
