The teenage girl sat across from me.
Hair a little on the “frumpy” side.
Clothing a little disheveled…
Eyes darting back and forth…hyper vigilant…on the defensive perhaps?
She was shy…reserved…withdrawn…ashamed…and yet excited.
She was pregnant!
Two words escaped her dry lips…
“I’m pregnant…”
After some more conversation
Three words escaped my curious lips…
“Who’s the father?”
Two words escaped her puzzled lips…
“Not sure…”
Three words escaped my investigative lips (the pattern was getting annoying!)
“Two choices perhaps?”
Her response sent my mind rattling in ways I didn’t know it could be rattled..
“Well, I didn’t have sex with one of them but he got close…”
I’m usually pretty well prepared and calm and fluent in these situations…
Not this time…
“He got close?” (I was stuck in these three word responses… not good!)
“I still might have gotten pregnant by him…”
Finally, I broke out of my three word response and laid down my baffled, bewildered three words plus one response from my confounded lips…
“I wouldn’t believe it…”

I wouldn’t believe it…
Would you?
And so it was with Mary and Joseph for months and months enduring the “rattled” minds of the community, much less their own “rattled” minds.
When the time came for Jesus to be born of the Virgin mother (Do we really understand how ridiculous that sounds? “Virgin Mother”) lowly shepherds were called upon to be the welcoming party, the party planners, the entertainment, the caterers and the guests of honor…
In a vacuum, if you had told me the God of the whole entire universe was going to send His only Son to the earth He created, to visit the people He created, to show His love and His grace and His mercy and that God was going to use the “favored one” they called Mary, who had never been with a man as a young teenager as the “vehicle” to make it all happen…
I wouldn’t believe it!
I guess that’s what makes the incarnation of the Son of God all the more believable and miraculous and mysterious and majestic…
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2. 8-11)
