Her name is Denise. She’s 27 years old.
His name is Dennis. He’s 45 years old.
They sat next to each other at a training event.
They laughed at the large clock on the wall. It wasn’t moving fast enough!
Five minutes later the shooting began.
Dennis and Denise dropped to the floor in tandem, in concert, in a flash.
Dennis wrapped his arms around Denise. Used his body as a shield to protect his table mate.
He whispered in her ear, “I got you…I got you…I got you…”

Her name is Denise. She’s 27 years old.
His name is Dennis. He’s 45 years old.
Denise is alive.
Dennis is dead.
Dennis died so that Denise might live.
She does…
He doesn’t…
Denise oozes and exudes gratitude that is too great for mere words found in the English vocabulary.
To Denise, Dennis is her friend and her hero.
Make no mistake…
Dennis is a friend
Dennis is a hero…
It’s not too difficult for those of us in the Christian community to make the connection with Jesus.
Like Dennis, Jesus died a cruel death.
Jesus died so that we might live and live eternally.
There is only one stark difference…
Dennis’ heroic and selfless action took place in the spur of the moment.
Jesus’ heroic and selfless action was the result of a plan Jesus knew about with every step his feet took on this planet.
The cross, the crucifixion, the crushing weight of his body asphyxiating his very soul was planned all along. In fact, Jesus predicts it three times during his ministry.
Dennis whispered, “I got you…” And he did.
Jesus whispers, “I got you…” And he does, every day, every moment, forever and ever and ever…
May I, may we ooze and exude gratitude that is too great for mere words found in the English vocabulary.
Jesus is our friend.
Jesus is our hero!
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.” (John 15: 12-14)
Dennis, thank you for loving your friend Denise!
Jesus, thank you for loving all of us…
May we love one another with these words:
“I Got You!”

So what is the backstory to today’s “25 days of Christmas”? And doesn’t it make you wonder in a time such as that if you (me) would be a hero? Thanks for the daily pause and reflection.
The hero’s name is Shannon Hilliard Johnson. I hope to God I can never see a such a thing again. (Let’s hope not.) Denise is going to name the child, Shannon and due to the name is androgynous, it does not matter if the child is a boy or a girl, and it suits her well.
Shannon Hilliard Johnson got some Austrian ancestry!
Explanation:
Valentin Lastinger (Austrian)
Hans Lastinger
Johann Georg Lastinger
Johann (John) Michael Lastinger
Andrew Lastinger
William Lastinger
Peter Cornelius Lastinger
Laura Josie Lastinger
Della Josephine Kelly
Willie Dell Hamilton
Robert Franklin Johnson
Shannon Hilliard Johnson (That’s him!!!!!!!)
Congratulations, Shannon! Well done! Rest easy, dear soul!
