The other night a friend of mine was sharing with me that a “Creepy Neighbor” lives next door to her family. With her husband out of town she grows increasingly nervous. Worst fears became reality when at midnight there was a sharp and loud pounding on the door.
Panic took over. Rational thought turned into soupy babbling. Her iPhone was within sight on the kitchen table but she would have to cross the front entryway to retrieve it, surely to be seen by the creepy neighbor. The shadowy figure loomed large at the door. Pounding away at the last barrier between life and certain death the knocking commenced once again. Her living, breathing body turned into petrified wood as she and her daughter considered that the best option would be to lock themselves in the bathroom. Frozen, immobile and filled with panic my friend breaks the bonds of petrification and moves to the front door yelling “What do you want? You need to leave! We’ve called the cops!”
What happened next was almost unbearable to listen to. A low voice on the other side of the door said, “You wanna open the door?” She screamed, “NO! You need to leave.” At her wits end she flipped on the porch light to” show the creepy neighbor that she meant business.
And what to her dilated terror filled eyes should appear, not the creepy neighbor, but her son!! He had come home early for Christmas to “surprise” her!!
Her son!
Not the “Creepy Neighbor!”
SeeingGodAtWorkEveryday…
There’s a knock at the door of your heart today…
It’s the same knock that was there yesterday and the day before.
It’s the same knock that will be there tomorrow and the day after.
Is it the Creepy Neighbor?
No it’s not…
It’s the Son!
Sometimes we believe the Son is the creepy neighbor because we mistook the Son for that judgmental friend who told us we were going to hell in a hand basket if kept up with our “sinful” behavior.
Sometimes we believe the Son is the creepy neighbor because we mistook the Son for that Bible toting, Bible thumping, sweating pastor in the baby blue leisure suit preaching incessantly about stuff that no one understood or cared to understand.
Sometimes we believe the Son is the creepy neighbor because we mistook the Son for a list of “Do’s and Don’ts…”
Sometimes we believe the Son is the creepy neighbor because we mistook the Son for the people who speak a dozen righteous things only to live out two dozen unrighteous things and the hypocrisy is just too much to take.
Sometimes we believe the Son is the creepy neighbor because we mistook the Son for the church that was in reality an exclusive country club clic.
I wonder what would happen if we would turn on the front porch light to reveal one thing and one thing only…It’s just the Son
The Son comes into our neighborhood, not as the Creepy Neighbor, but as the One who is more than happy to come into the home of our hearts and listen to us, offer us grace and mercy and life and ultimately love us for who we are right now, today, tomorrow and forever.
Of course…
One thing is required for this to happen…
Open the front door…
The greatest Christmas present ever just might be standing on your front porch…
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” (Revelation 3. 20 ESV)
