Thursday’s Thoughts from Pastor David
Alert! Alert! Alert!!
This is the Thursday before Mother’s Day!!!
You still have time to shop…
Mother’s Day is an interesting day.
Typically, it is the third highest attended Church service outside of Christmas Eve and Easter.
I could talk about that for days!
Forgive my digression…
Mother’s Day is an interesting day.
Wrapped in this day is the full gamut of emotions.
Where do you find yourself on this emotional roller coaster as Mother’s Day Sunday, May 14th approaches?
Your Mom is still alive and the two of you have incredible relationship and you cannot wait to celebrate her role and her love in your life.
Your Mom has passed away, perhaps this is the first Mother’s Day without her, and the two of you had the most incredible relationship and although Mother’s Day will be bittersweet, the overwhelming emotion is one of gratitude and love.
Your Mom is still alive and the two of you have a “so-so” relationship. As Mother’s Day approaches so does your blood pressure approach a new high as every Hallmark Card talks about how great your Mom is, where in reality for you, you would welcome a card that simply stated, “Thanks for being an okay Mom. I know it was a struggle for you and the current state of affairs still shows the struggle.” (I was going to try and make a rhyming poem out of that, but it just didn’t feel right.)
Your Mom has passed away and you did not have a good relationship with her at all. The thought and the very existence of Mother’s Day brings on a certain kind of empty feeling. You don’t feel great. You don’t feel bad. You just feel bland, like a mouth full of Pablum.
Perhaps you are a Mom and the idea of your children rallying around you at home, at church, at a local park or restaurant brings more joy to your heart than you can imagine.
Perhaps you are a Mom and the idea of your children rallying around you at home, at church, at a local park or restaurant brings more angst and heartburn to your heart than you can imagine.
There are beautiful, faithful, outgoing, incredible women who for whatever reason have no children at all to rally around them this Mother’s Day.
Some of these women will feel cheated. Others will feel fortunate. Some will stay out of the limelight this weekend for they have grown weary of staring into the blank, empty, confused stares of those who have asked, “How many children do you have?”, only to endure the awkward silence afterward when you say, “I don’t have any children.”
I think by now you get the point… The full range of emotions which “Mother’s Day” evoke can run long, deep and wide.
As for me personally, having been adopted and now having a relationship with my birth mother, I have a double blessing in which to celebrate.
My birth mom, Betty Jean Padgett gave me “Breath!”
My Mom, Judy Dendy gave me “Life!”
I wouldn’t have one without the other!
Whether our Mom’s are dead or alive.
Whether our relationship with our Moms are/were great or indifferent.
One thing stands true…
We wouldn’t be here without them…
To the Ladies, I give God the utmost praise for the outpouring of His creativity in creating you and unmatched value you bring to our world and to our lives!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow…
And a quick shout out to my Moms…
“I love how we don’t have to say that I’m your favorite child!”
Grace and peace,
Laugh often and Fear not!
David!
